Abstract
Serologic surveys in military recruit populations of Western hemisphere countries such as the United States, Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia have been conducted during recent years. However, to our knowledge this is the first report of a nation-wide military recruit sero-survey of an Eastern hemisphere Asian country. The objectives of this study were: (1) to collect blood samples from Republic of Korea(ROK) military recruits originating from geographically diverse areas and representative; (2) to obtain pertinent epidemiological data on each recruit from whom a blood sample was obtained; (3) to determine in the laboratory by various serologic tests, antibody prevalence for various bacterial, rickettsial, and viral diseases; and (4) to compare these findings with those obtained with other military recruit surveys.
